Mount Vernon is the third community to be featured in our 2015 Community Snapshot series. Snapshots for Yonkers and New Rochelle have already been released, and White Plains, Ossining, Port Chester, and Peekskill will follow throughout the next week.

Changing School Climate to Improve Academic Achievement

An exciting component of the 2015 Mount Vernon Community Snapshot is that Longfellow Elementary School has set the standard in Westchester for creating a positive school culture and reducing student misbehavior. We were excited to learn about the PBIS model from Principal Jamal Doggett at the Raising the Bar on Academic Achievement summit earlier this year.

A Note about Graduation Rates

It’s important to note that while it may appear that there has been a drastic drop in the graduation rate compared to last year’s Mount Vernon Community Snapshot, that’s not entirely accurate. In last year’s snapshots, we featured the six-year graduation rate, which was 73%. This year, however, we decided to show the four-year graduation rate (48%), since that’s what most people think of when it comes to graduation rates. Unfortunately, that means we’re not comparing apples to apples, so to speak.

Mount Vernon Graduation RatesLet’s compare the graduation rate consistently to see the real story (see chart at right). Keep in mind that the release of graduation data lags behind a bit, so the 2014 Community Snapshots featured 2013 data, and this year’s 2015 Community Snapshots feature 2014 data.

Put simply, the four-year graduation rate decreased, while the six-year graduation rate actually increased. This means that more students successfully graduated in Mount Vernon (good news!); it just took them a longer time to do so. Still, we’ll need three or more years of data to see to draw any meaningful conclusions from this trend, so it’s too soon to make any definitive statements about whether Mount Vernon is doing better or worse.
