WCA’s Statement Regarding Family Separation at the Border

Westchester Children’s Association is deeply disturbed by reports of children who were separated from their parents at our southern border. Our government’s recent policy is so harmful that it can fairly be called child abuse, as was articulated by the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Colleen Kraft. Separation from parents or other trusted caregivers is one of several traumatic experiences, called Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, that is shown to negatively affect children’s lifelong health and well-being.

Just yesterday the President ordered an end to family separations and directed that families be incarcerated together. Kids should not be taken from their parents in the first place and they do not belong in jail. We urge the President and his administration to swiftly reunite the thousands of children who were brutally separated from their parents. We urge the administration and Congress to end the zero-tolerance policy that treats all those seeking to enter the country, even when legally seeking asylum, as criminals.
