Today, January 6th, 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the following expansions to New York’s child tax credit, known as the Empire State Child Credit:

  1. For parents with children under the age of 4, the tax credit will be increased to $1,000 per child per year.
  2. For parents with children above 4 years old, the credit will be increased to $500 per child per year.
  3. The ‘phase-in’ eligibility restrictions will be removed, meaning benefits will be easier to access for our lowest income families.

These expansions would not have been possible without the incredible advocacy of the Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council (CPRAC), of which WCA’s Executive Director, Allison Lake, is a member. Thanks in no small part to their recommendations and discussions with the Governor, these expansions will become a reality and will work to provide families across New York state with much needed support.

Westchester Children’s Association thanks the Governor and the members of CPRAC for making this expansion a reality for families across New York! We look forward to the work ahead to further expand tax credits and supports, and to truly cut child poverty in half within a decade.
