WCA released its 2024 report on Child Poverty, “Uplifting Courageous Voices: From the Frontline of Poverty in Westchester County.” This report is the result of months of documenting parent experiences and identifying program and policy supports to alleviate the impact of poverty.
Sponsored by a grant from the Robin Hood Foundation, WCA facilitated groups in the Westchester Community Health Center’s Mount Vernon and Greenburgh locations, as well as the Open Door Family Medical Center’s Ossining and Port Chester locations. These focus groups were inclusive of different family backgrounds, being conducted in both English and Spanish. Parents who participated in these groups shared their personal experiences with food instability, housing access, and healthcare.
The March 7, 2024 event introducing this report featured commentary from Victoria Esposito, Visiting Assistant Professor of Law at Albany Law School. Esposito was the first Advocacy Director of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, where she worked to address systemic issues affecting low-income individuals. Her article “A Systemic Reimagining of Poverty Law” was featured in the Fall 2023 volume of the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law and Policy. You can read more about the launch event here.
