Striving for Equity in Education
WHITE PLAINS, NY – Westchester Children’s Association’s annual 2021 Advocacy Breakfast entitled “A Teachable Moment: Ensuring Equity During the Pandemic and Beyond” will be held on March 31, 2021, at 9:00 am via Zoom with speakers Congressman Jamaal Bowman, 16th Congressional District, and Dr. Lester Young Jr., Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents. Admission is open to the public particularly parents, grandparents, and caregivers, who are encouraged to attend. U.S. Representative Jamaal Bowman leads his constituents in the northern Bronx and southern Westchester County and is the Vice-Chair of the US Congressional Committee on Education and Labor. Dr. Young Jr. leads the New York State Board of Regents which is responsible for the general supervision of all education activities in the State. The virtual event aims to foster a discussion of what children and families will need to heal and move forward during and beyond the pandemic and how we can close the digital divide. They will deliver the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Advocacy Lecture sharing their expertise as educators and thought-leaders on keeping kids in positive learning environments.
This year’s speakers are timely as Westchester Children’s Association (WCA) continues to push for greater support for remote learning challenges faced by children, parents, and caregivers during the pandemic while looking ahead for more permanent, systemic changes. The organization first documented the need by surveying Westchester parents, caregivers, and Superintendents last spring. They are pushing forth a Remote Learning Advocacy agenda developed in partnership with school districts, children’s advocates, county departments, community organizations, and elected officials. WCA wants to demonstrate public support for more equitable resources and seeks signatures for the ‘Remote Learning Petition’ that can be found at www.wca4kids.org/petition. The agenda and petition address the needs for access to affordable internet services, adequate computers and devices, digital literacy training, language support, and programs that address the emotional and social challenges heightened during the pandemic.
