The Board of Directors of Westchester Children’s Association (WCA) has announced that effective June 2018, Cora Greenberg will retire as Executive Director of the organization after more than 23 years of service.
Greenberg joined the 103-year-old organization in 1994. During her tenure, WCA expanded from a staff of two and an annual budget of $120,000 to eight employees and a yearly budget of nearly $1 million. Over the years, WCA has also grown in influence and impact. Its annual advocacy breakfast and child advocacy lecture have become a signature event for child advocates around the County. It has helped to increase County funding for youth programs and improved the selection process for funded programs through its Campaign for Kids. WCA has brought such national figures as Hillary Clinton and Marian Wright Edelman to the County as key-note speakers. In addition, in this on-demand age of information, WCA’s data publications and analyses have become go-to resources for many advocates and policymakers.
“It has been a privilege to work with such an extraordinary staff, board, and array of community partners,” said Ms. Greenberg, “and I am immensely proud of the positive, transformational changes that we have made together in the lives of children and youth. In my career, I’ve seen that while the details change, the basic needs of our kids remain the same: safe housing, quality healthcare, a good education, and consistent adult support that empowers them to become productive adults and informed citizens. I hope that one day, every child will be able to take these things for granted.”
In making the announcement, Doug Gould, President, WCA Board of Directors, said that the Board had appointed a committee to help fill the executive director position and manage the transition. WCA is currently planning opportunities to recognize and celebrate Greenberg’s legacy; additional details to follow. “Westchester Children’s Association is very fortunate to have had Cora at the helm for more than two decades,” Gould said. “The initiatives she and her staff have launched and executed not only enhanced the quality of life for the County’s children, they have also helped to establish a cadre of child advocates that spans all sectors and segments of the Westchester community. Equally important, Cora has set a course that will leave WCA well positioned to be even more effective in the future. We wish her nothing but the best as she embraces the next phase of her life’s journey.”
Since 1914, Westchester Children’s Association has remained steadfast in its mission: to improve the lives of Westchester’s young people by shaping policies and programs to meet their needs, and by keeping their well-being at the top of the public agenda.
