RTA LOBBY DAY IN ALBANY – Jan 27, 2020

Monday, January 27th is a special Lobby Day for Raise the Age/Youth Justice and Solutions Not Suspensions and you are welcome to join us!

WCA will travel to our state capitol to motivate lawmakers to improve school suspension policies and policies affecting justice-involved youth alongside other concerned residents, advocates, youth, and community leaders. Our priority is uplifting New York State toward more age-appropriate, rehabilitative, and restorative school discipline and youth justice practices and policies.

Get Involved by:
– Standing With Us in Albany. RSVP via email to wca@wca4kids.org by January 16th, or
– Calling key legislators to show your support,

  • Governor Andrew M. Cuomo – 518-474-8390
  • Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins – 518-455-2585
  • Speaker Carl E. Heastie – 518-455-3791

Find your local representative by clicking here.

TELL THEM:
Students who are suspended from school are at greater risk of involvement in the justice system later on creating a connection between the two systems. This needs to change! New York State must shift away from ineffective, unnecessarily punitive suspensions and toward more restorative and rehabilitative alternatives that keep kids in school and avoid negative behaviors later on.

Building on recent Raise the Age reforms, New York must further support children and youth involved with the justice system, treating them in age-appropriate ways that empower them and support them toward their successful transition to the community.

WCA thanks you for your compassion and activism!
